LAND of LEGENDS for Our Future
COCHISE COUNTY, AZ
Welcome to Land of Legends for Our Future!
We are a coalition of local businesses, landowners, faith leaders, sportsmen, vintners, conservation and recreation groups seeking to permanently protect Cochise County's iconic Whetstone, Dragoon and Chiricahua mountiain ranges - our Land of Legends - for our future.
Our Legendary Lands. These historic natural treasures on public land provide clean water, world-class outdoor recreation, key habitat for Arizona’s endangered wildlife, cultural and spiritual values and the stunning scenery that makes Cochise County such a wonderful place to live.
Cornerstones of Our Economy. The Whetstones, Dragoons and Chiricahuas are also cornerstones of our local economy. These last remaining undeveloped mountain ranges are vital watersheds for the integrity of Kartchner Caverns and provide the vast, quiet open space essential for Fort Huachuca's Electronic Proving Ground and its future. Their scenic beauty gives us a competitive advantage over other regions in attracting new businesses, talented workers, visitors & investment in our communities. The Whetstone Dragoon & Chiricahua mountains are also critical sources of clean water vital to Cochise County's flourishing local wineries, vineyards and other agriculture industries.
Protecting Our Future. While these spectacular public lands are part of the Coronado National Forest, they are not permanently protected from rapid urbanization, mining, landscape fragmentation, and irresponsible off-road vehicle use that seriously threaten these fragile remnants of Cochise County's rich cultural and natural history. Current temporary Forest Service safeguards for these sensitive watersheds on public land are not strong enough to truly protect them against private industrial development, roadbuilding, inappropriate uses and encroachment in the future.
A Community Conversation. We need a community solution to permanently protect the wild and historic character of these Lands of Legends in Cochise County, for today, and for generations to come. We are launching a community conversation about how we can best protect these natural treasures for our future. Join us!
